Case Study: Placing Electrician Contractors Across 10 Sites To Fill Urgent Skills Gaps
A multinational industrial engineering services provider specialising in EV charging sites across the UK needed 25 contractors over three months to fill vital skills gaps.
The client’s challenge
This service provider had faced challenges in hiring electricians for 10 of their EV charging sites for multiple months, with several projects experiencing urgent skills shortages.
We had previously worked with this provider on a full-time, permanent hire. They were so impressed with our ability to source excellent talent within a tight timeframe that, when we made them aware of our ability to secure contractors and temporary hires as well, they asked for our support with recruiting electricians across multiple EV sites.
Actions taken by VIQU Energy
To support resource management across the 10 sites, we analysed where contractors were needed over the 3-month period and recommended a new approach to the client.
We identified opportunities to redeploy electricians once their contracts had finished at one site, directly to new contracts at other sites. This reduced the client’s need to repeatedly go back to market and hire contractors separately at each location. It allowed for better coordination of workforce management and meant that contractors could start immediately at a new site once their previous contract ended. This was a win-win situation for both parties.
Additionally, to further accelerate delivery and minimise delays, this client trusted us to implement “straight starts”, which removed interviews with their hiring managers from the hiring process. This required us to undertake and complete interviews directly with candidates, followed by rigorous vetting and background checks to confirm each contractor’s skills and experience before their start date.
The outcomes
We successfully hired 25 electricians across 10 sites for this client. Over 20% of these contractors also went on to work at multiple sites when their original contracts ended. This meant that this client was able to hold on to great talent for longer and experience fewer delays in securing contractors for each location.
The client was very pleased with our ability to hire contractors at pace and support them in managing both the recruitment process and the contract workforce during a period of significant skills shortages for them.
